# Releases

> Update Elide with `elide upgrade`, install a specific release or nightly build, and pin a project to an Elide version with `elide use` and `.elideversion`.

Changes are in the [Changelog](https://elide.help/docs/changelog); artifacts, checksums, and dated tags are on
[GitHub Releases](https://github.com/elide-dev/elide/releases).

OpenRewrite integration is experimental in 1.6.0. See [the changelog overview](https://elide.help/docs/changelog#story-openrewrite)
and [the OpenRewrite guide](https://elide.help/docs/toolchain/jvm/rewrite);
recipe compatibility hardening is planned for a later release. The experimental
[dependency code index](https://elide.help/docs/toolchain/jvm/code-index) is also available for type and reference queries.

## Next release: 1.6.3

The [1.6.3 feature overview](https://elide.help/docs/changelog#inside-elide-1-6-3) covers the release in development:

- Android APKs, AAR libraries, and app bundles, with an Android template and opt-in [Compose compiler](https://elide.help/docs/toolchain/jvm/kotlinc#compose).
- [Micronaut applications](https://elide.help/docs/toolchain/jvm/micronaut): Java annotation processing, Pkl application configuration, JUnit tests, and JVM or native packaging.
- [Shared test containers](https://elide.help/docs/toolchain/testing#shared-test-containers): disposable services shared by JavaScript, TypeScript, and JUnit tests.
- [Python packages and isolated console tools](https://elide.help/docs/python-packages): project environments and `elide uv tool run`.
- [Maven version overrides](https://elide.help/docs/toolchain/dependencies#maven-version-resolutions): select exact versions throughout a dependency graph.
- [Build and test telemetry](https://elide.help/docs/opentelemetry/runtime#enable-build-reports): correlate tasks, cache results, and test outcomes in an OTLP collector.
- [Pkl rendering](https://elide.help/docs/pkl-configuration) and [terminal Markdown](https://elide.help/docs/terminal-markdown): generate configuration or read documentation without a project.

These features require a 1.6.3 development build. The latest released version remains 1.6.2.

## Latest release: 1.6.2

The [1.6.2 feature overview](https://elide.help/docs/changelog#inside-elide-1-6-2) describes the latest release:

- [JavaScript and TypeScript build extensions](https://elide.help/docs/toolchain/build-extensions): cached tasks, packaged extensions,
  and in-process JVM tools.
- [Embedded C compiler and linker via LLVM](https://elide.help/docs/toolchain/native/cc): host object and LLVM IR output, plus in-memory
  compilation, linking, and invocation through ORC LLJIT.
- [jextract](https://elide.help/docs/toolchain/native/jextract) and [C header bindings in Java compilation](https://elide.help/docs/toolchain/jvm/javac#c-header-bindings):
  standalone Java FFM generation, in-memory javac integration, named Pkl groups, and generated-source export.
- [Environment and properties](https://elide.help/docs/environment): automatic base/local files, explicit file lists, precedence,
  dotenvx-compatible encrypted values, and invocation-scoped configuration.
- [Java ABI jars](https://elide.help/docs/toolchain/jvm/javac#abi-jars), [Kotlin ABI compilation](https://elide.help/docs/toolchain/jvm/kotlinc#abi-jars),
  and [dependency-aware jfmt formatting](https://elide.help/docs/toolchain/jvm/formatting#resolve-and-rewrite-imports).

Native tools are included on macOS arm64 and dynamically linked Linux amd64/arm64. Windows and fully static
distributions retain their existing JVM tools; see the native-tools guides for the exact capabilities.

Download [Elide 1.6.2](https://github.com/elide-dev/elide/releases/tag/v1.6.2), or use a full dated tag from
GitHub Releases when pinning a nightly build. The [1.6.0 feature narrative](https://elide.help/docs/changelog#release-story)
and benchmark evidence remain available below the 1.6.2 overview.

## Update Elide

```bash
elide upgrade                    # update to the latest build on your channel
elide upgrade --check            # check without updating
elide upgrade --channel release  # channels: release, nightly
```

Update a package-manager install through that package manager.

## Install a specific build

```bash
curl -sSL --tlsv1.2 elide.sh | bash -s -- --install-rev=VERSION
```

For a reproducible nightly, pass a full dated tag from GitHub Releases.

## Pin a project to a version

```bash
elide use 1.6.2
```

This writes `.elideversion` and installs that version; every `elide` run in the project then uses it.

| Flag | Effect |
| --- | --- |
| `elide use --no-install` | Write `.elideversion` only. |
| `elide use --channel <channel>` | Download from `release` or `nightly`. |
| `--use-version <version>` | Run an installed version for one invocation. |
| `--ignore-version` | Run the current binary, ignoring `.elideversion`. |
